Recently, the global Salmon producer MOWI (MeWI) released the "Salmon Farming Industry Handbook 2023" (hereinafter referred to as the handbook).
According to the Manual, in 2022, the global production of farmed salmon (including Pacific salmon, large trout, small trout, coho salmon, etc.) exceeded 2.81 million tons (GWT), 10,000 tons less than the 2.81 million tons in 2021, which is the first negative growth in global farmed salmon production in the past five years.
The global wild salmon catch (including cowhead salmon, sockeye salmon, etc.) accounts for about 1/4 of the production of farmed salmon, pink salmon, cowhead salmon, sockeye salmon are more common species.
In farmed salmon, the global production of Atlantic salmon in 2022 exceeded 2.5 million tons. From the perspective of origin, Norway ranks first in production with 1.365 million tons, accounting for 54.6%; Chile remained the second producer with 678,000 tons; The third producer is the United Kingdom (Scotland), with a output of 148,000 tons in 2022; North American production is 136,000 tons. The output of the four major producing areas totaled 2.327 million tons.
In 2022, the world's major producers of Atlantic salmon are Mowi, Salmar, Cermaq, Lerøy Seafood, Aquachile and other companies. Among them, Mowi occupies the first share, the supply of more than 470,000 tons, is the world's very large Atlantic salmon producers, accounting for 21.5% of Norwegian origin, 32% of British (Scottish) origin, 30% of North American origin, and 9.7% of Chilean origin supply share.
The annual growth rate of Atlantic salmon production from 2012-2022 is 4%, a trend that comes as the global Atlantic salmon farming industry has reached a certain level of production and biological boundaries are being breached. Annual growth is expected to remain stable at 3% in 2022-2027. With the implementation of measures to reduce the biological footprint, the future growth of Atlantic salmon is expected to be driven by more than just industry and regulators. The need for technological progress, the development of corresponding pharmaceutical products, the implementation of non-pharmaceutical technology, the improvement of industry regulations and the cooperation of companies in the industry to achieve progress.
According to the data of the Handbook, the main markets supplied by Norway's producing areas are Europe and Asia, and the supply is far greater than the market consumption within the producing area; The main markets supplied by Chile are the United States, South America and Asia. The main market supplied by North American producing areas is the United States, but the local supply is far less than the market demand; Scottish production areas supply the UK and French domestic markets.
Over the years, due to the Atlantic salmon in the form of fresh circulation in the market, the transport time, conditions, costs have higher requirements, therefore, each producing area is particularly focused on the development of the surrounding consumer market.
From the perspective of consumer market, in 2022, the European Union digested 985,000 tons of Atlantic salmon, accounting for about 40% of the national production of Atlantic salmon; North America is the second largest consumer market, with a consumption of 651,000 tons (of which, the market consumption of the United States alone is close to 600,000 tons). The Asian region, which has a small supply of aquaculture in the world, absorbed 370,000 tons of consumption.
The Brazilian and Asian markets have been growing at a significantly higher rate than traditional markets. However, compared with traditional markets such as Europe and North America, these two markets have a higher share of food services, and are affected by the COVID-19 virus and rising air transport costs, which will affect the growth rate in 2020-2022 to some extent.
In terms of per capita consumption, the per capita consumption of the Chinese market (mainland + Hong Kong) is 0.07 kg (WFE), and that of the French market is 4.16 kg; In Norway, Sweden and Finland, per capita consumption even reached between 6-8 kg. Many markets still have huge growth potential.
